[News] Girls' Generation Acting Skills Toss-up: How Does Sooyoung Fare?

Sooyoung, the newest singer-turned-actress in Girls’ Generation, has been showcasing her talent in acting for the past two weeks in new drama, “Cyrano Agency.”

Other than Sooyoung, other members of Girls’ Generation, including Yuri, Yoona, and Jessica have also acted in previous dramas.

How were each Girls’ Generation member’s acting skills displayed in their respective dramas?

Sooyoung has been playing the lead female role in the now-airing romantic comedy, “Cyrano Agency.” Her character, called Gong Min-Young, is a romantic, quirky, cute young woman who believes in realizing true love. She often clashes with the other male lead character, Seo Byung-hoon, and interactions between the two characters often incite laughs.

With only four episodes released, Sooyoung was still able to capture the viewer’s attention with a completely new side of her that she has not yet displayed before. Sooyoung was able to portray her character in a natural way, and her chemistry with co-star Lee Jong-hyuk is also great.

Viewers found that Sooyoung was able to let go of her “idol image” to be fully immersed in her character. She did not mind making faces or acting weird in order to make the drama more comedic. Fans of Sooyoung also said that the character very much suited her.

Yuri also made her acting debut last year in “Fashion King.” Although ratings for the drama did not do so well, Yuri impressed viewers and the drama’s staff members with her first-time acting skills.

In “Fashion King,” Yuri played a cold-hearted character named Choi An Na, who had deep emotional scars and is driven by her career in the fashion industry. In the drama, Choi An Na tries to win the heart of Lee Je-hoon, who is played by actor Jung Jae-hyuk.

Yuri was able to portray the complicated and fierce side of her character, and she was especially praised by viewers for scenes where she had to fully show her character’s anger and frustration. A staff member of “Fashion King” commented on Yuri’s acting, saying, “We were worried at first because this is Yuri’s first time acting. But now, we have nothing to worry. She is doing so well. In my opinion, Yuri will be able to play a main role soon after ‘Fashion King.’ She’s got potential.”

Yoona, who was acting in a competing drama at the same time as Yuri, played the female lead in “Love Rain” last year. Yoona had to portray two characters, including the young Kim Yoon-hee in the 1970s and also Jung Ha-na, who is Yoon-hee’s daughter.

Domestic ratings for “Love Rain” were also very low, but fans of Yoona showed their support but saying how much Yoona’s acting has improved with “Love Rain.” Yoona’s image fit very well with the shy Yoon-hee, as the director of “Love Rain” said, “Yoona has a clean, proper image that’s hard to find these days. She exceeded my expectations in acting out the character of Yoon Hee, so I’m really proud and satisfied.”

The director further praised Yoona, saying, “After meeting Yoona in real life, I realized that she has a bright personality and plays a part in livening up the atmosphere of the set. When she’s acting, however, she becomes deeply immersed in her role and aptly pulls everything together. I’d love to compliment her for being a young actress with such passion and concentration for her craft.”

Jessica, who played a smaller role in “Wild Romance” earlier in 2012, got every male fan jealous as she had a steamy kiss scene with male lead, Lee Dong-wook, in the drama. Jessica acted as Kang Jong-Hee, who is Moo-Yeol’s ex-girlfriend in the drama.

“Wild Romance” viewers praised Jessica’s ability to portray a character struggling with bipolar disorder. The audience said that Jessica’s acting skills were impressive, as she did not play a bright character but a very dark role. Some netizens commented, saying “Jessica’s acting proves she works hard.”
